Abstract: The feed system of the Lithium Lorentz Force Accelerator (LiLFA) in Princeton University’s Electric Propulsion and Plasma Dynamics Laboratory (EPPDyL) functions to carry precise amounts of molten lithium to the thruster cathode. The aim of this project is to reconfigure the LiLFA feed system while simultaneously improving key performance parameters. The system was first reassembled and evaluated for completeness and functionality, which included re-engineering existing components such as the heater power panel and making design decisions regarding thermocouple placement. Lithium purity improvements were proposed through the addition of a cap and valve system as well as a filtration system. The piston positional accuracy was improved with a new custom robotic system from Zaber. In summary, this work has prepared the lab to be ready to fire the thruster with a more accurate feed system and purer lithium soon after the arrival of the new robotic system.
