dc.description.abstractThis paper will explore the development of the theoretical underpinnings of superconductivity. Then it will discuss cuprate superconductors and their novel behaviors relative to typical superconductors; notably, that a Nernst signal is observed in a region above the critical temperature of the superconductor. It will include measurements of the temperature and field dependence of electrical resistance and the Nernst effect of one cuprate superconductor, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x (Bi-2212), and detail the methods for the measurements conducted. It will then discuss how an extended Nernst region above the critical temperature (Tc) in cuprates indicates that phase coherence determines Tc in cuprates.en_US
