Abstract: A search for squarks and gluinos is conducted, using the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider, in events containing energetic jets and apparent missing energy. Analyzed are 1.1/fb of data collected during the 2011 run at 7 TeV. Backgrounds from the mis-measurement of known processes are strongly suppressed using a novel kinematic variable, and the rates of the remaining backgrounds are estimated using control samples. The data are found to agree with expectations from the Standard Model. The results are interpreted within the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, where equal squark and gluino masses below 1.1 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. The results are also interpreted within simplified supersymmetric models, for which upper limits on the production cross sections are determined as functions of the super-partner particle masses.
