Many converging factors have contributed to the need for community-based crisis and emergency responses for people with serious mental illnesses or those having psychiatric crises (such as acute suicidality). The need for community-based crisis and emergency responses for people who have intellectual or development disabilities is also well established. The models and approaches described in this literature review have typically been designed and implemented for one population or the other and remarkably few studies have considered both groups. This summary of the published research to date provides a sampling of the types of police-based and related emergency response programs that have received some research attention, as well as the methodological approaches used and their results.en_US
