Abstract: Vocabulary knowledge is essential to effective communication in a second language. As an aspect of language that is often associated with rote memorization through flashcards and vocabulary lists, vocabulary acquisition is an overlooked component of second language learning. Much like grammar learning, vocabulary learning can be proceduralized in an efficient manner that allows language learners to use the words they know in appropriate contexts. As the attention on vocabulary acquisition grows, researchers are looking into vocabulary frequency lists as a valuable source to understand how native speakers are using language and create pedagogical materials that their findings. This paper is an investigation on and construction of vocabulary frequency lists in Japanese and how they can be used in conjunction with extensive reading in order to help Japanese language learners achieve their language goals.
