Title: The Crossing Number of Composite Knots
Authors: Stewart, Luca
Advisors: Szabo, Zoltan
Department: Mathematics
Class Year: 2024
Abstract: This paper will provide an overview of the field of knot theory, both the historical development of the field and a mathematical overview. It will provide the mathematical background in knot theory necessary to examine an open problem in knot theory: the additivity of the crossing number of a connected sum of knots. This paper will examine and discuss the current research and attempts at proving this conjecture.
