Authors: Castellon, Julian

Department: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Class Year: 2020
Abstract: Once widely used by professional photographers and artists alike, instant film has beenrelegated to the recesses of social media. Treated like a toy, it is appreciated only forits novelty. This is at least in part because the only instant film systems available onthe market todayare toys.Professional instant film systems have all been discontinued, and with them the films that they use. Gone are the days of high quality inexpensiveinstant prints. Or so you thought! Contained in this thesis is the design, refinement, andproduction of a contemporary Instant FilmBack—an adapter that allows professionalmedium format cameras of yesteryear (namely the Mamiya 645 Super, Pro, and ProTL) to shoot modern, mass-produced, inexpensive Fuji Instax (and Polaroid PIF 300)instant film.
