Title: Hollywood v Streaming A Close-Up Shot on the Effect of Netflix Subscriptions on the U.S. Domestic Box Office
Authors: Harvey, David
Advisors: Bhatt, Swati
Department: Economics
Class Year: 2022
Abstract: The objective of this thesis is to determine the impacts of Netflix’s emergence as a streaming giant on domestic box office attendance numbers. The assumed hypothesis that Netflix’s prominence would have a negative impact on these numbers, the impact was smaller than expected. The exploration seemed to uncover Netflix’s stand-alone identity with the appearance of two entertainment avenues coexisting currently as two separate entities. However, the continual decline of box office attendance numbers and evidence that Netflix is contributing may be indicative of the future growing disruption streaming services will have on the domestic box office.
