Abstract: Advancements in space exploration and astronomical observation have spurred the need for innovative technologies to enhance the capabilities of space telescopes. Space telescopes have difficulty observing distant objects, particularly in observing exoplanets, amidst the interference of starlight. One critical advancement is the development of a Starshade, which suppresses the starlight from a star, enabling the observation of faint exoplanets orbiting the parent star. This thesis introduces the Miura-Ori origami pattern as the base of the Starshade. This innovative folding technique, renowned for its unique characteristics, could provide a resourceful solution to block this unwanted starlight. This thesis explores the integration of axisymmetric Miura-Ori origami as a transformative solution for deploying a Starshade in space. The core objectives of this thesis include designing and prototyping an axisymmetric Miura-Ori Starshade, scaling this preliminary design, and controlling remote deployment. This thesis tackles the challenges of space exploration and emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of origami-inspired engineering solutions, demonstrating their potential to reshape the trajectory of space observation and exploration.
