Title: Not Your Great White Way: An Ethnography of New York City and New Jersey's Latiné and New Theatrical Works Rehearsal Room Processes
Authors: Burja, Kaelani

Department: Anthropology
Class Year: 2023
Abstract: How do professional theatre-makers craft performances that uplift historically excluded narratives? This thesis is an ethnography of professional New Jersey, off-Broadway, and off-off-Broadway rehearsal rooms. This ethnography analyzes how underrepresented artists maneuver historically exclusive theatrical spaces to produce new works that have been traditionally undervalued. “We See You, White American Theatre,” labor union contracts, anthropological theories, and ethnographic material guide this anthropologic exploration.
