Abstract: Count Johann von Bernstorff served as the German ambassador to the United States during World War I. He personally pursued peace, and more specifically, pressured the United States to mediate peace talks. However, the German Imperial government ordered Ambassador Bernstorff to sabotage American manufacturing. This thesis explores the ambassador's dilemma of striving for peace while being ordered to damage American industries.
