Abstract: Research surrounding the benefits of having weak ties began over fifty years ago, with the release of Granovetter’s Strength of Weak Ties theory. This paper explores the concept of the “strength of weak ties” and its implications for networking and job referrals. Drawing on Granovetter’s seminal work on the topic and a research study entitled A Causal Test of the Strength of Weak Ties, this study investigates how weak ties can lead to a wider range of job opportunities and enhance one’s career prospects. Through a mixed-methods approach that combines survey data and in-depth interviews, this study examines the role of weak ties in job search behavior. The findings highlight the significant benefits of weak ties in facilitating access to new job opportunities, increasing social capital, and enhancing overall career development.
