Title: From Playing Fields to Zoom Calls: The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Princeton Student-Athletes
Authors: Boeckman, Elizabeth

Department: Anthropology
Class Year: 2023
Abstract: How impactful was the COVID-19 pandemic? An unthinkable event that forever affected our ‘college experience,’ this thesis examines the effects of the pandemic through first-hand accounts. Reflecting upon my experience of leaving Princeton’s campus midway through my freshman year and navigating being a student-athlete during this unprecedented time sparked a greater motivation to understand the impact of the pandemic on other Princeton student-athletes. This thesis combines my passion for athletics and fascination with understanding the effects of the pandemic on fellow student-athletes given that the pandemic significantly impacted my decision to retire early from swimming. Through 11 interviews and a survey that was distributed to 34 additional Princeton student-athletes, this thesis highlights the unique experiences during the pandemic. While every student-athlete had their own distinct challenges during the pandemic, the time away from campus triggered significant reflections for student-athletes regarding their mental health and relationship with their sport.
