Authors: Briones, Alejandro

Department: Anthropology
Class Year: 2023
Abstract: This thesis aims to explore the concept of value within modern monetary systems and the emergence of cryptocurrencies, specifically Bitcoin. Drawing on anthropological theories and experiences in the financial industry, this thesis analyzes the diverse interpretations of value presented by David Graeber and Karen Ho. The research examines the social construction of value, the influence of personal and professional values in decision-making, and the balance between social capital and technical expertise. The rise of Bitcoin challenges traditional notions of value and exchange, prompting a reevaluation of these concepts. Through an examination of the complexities of the finance industry and the emergence of Bitcoin, this thesis highlights the dynamic nature of value systems and their significance in human societies. Finally, this research concludes with a call for further anthropological research on Bitcoin's social, cultural, and political implications and potential impact on the question: What is Value?
